New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey has made a habit of getting key players under contract sooner rather than later throughout his tenure in New York, and it's a positive change of pace from the last few decision makers the Jets have had in recent history.
It started with young cornerstones Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner last summer, and carried into the regular season with new contracts for Josh Myers and Jeremy Ruckert.
The most recent extensions were for running back Breece Hall and right guard Joe Tippmann, two key starters on offense who were absolutely deserving of the long-term security they received.
But who's next in line for a new contract from the Jets? And how soon could pen be put to paper?
Will McDonald may have to wait another year before talking extension with Jets
ESPN had every beat writer name one player from their respective team who could be in line for a contract extension in the near future, and Rich Cimini named Jets pass rusher Will McDonald as the next possible candidate.
McDonald, the Jets' 2023 first-round draft pick, had his fifth-year option picked up this offseason and figures to play a key role as a pass rush specialist in 2026.
"The Jets exercised McDonald's fifth-year option for 2027 ($13.75 million), so they have him under contract for two years at $16.75 million -- a relative bargain. There's no rush to get anything done long term. They will let him play out the 2026 season and reevaluate at that point. And now that right guard Joe Tippmann (four years, $62 million) is extended, too, the Jets have their contract extensions done for the year."Rich Cimini
Despite some other members of the 2023 draft class receiving contract extensions this offseason, such as Houston Texans star Will Anderson Jr. and Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell, it seems like McDonald will have to wait at least another year before it's time to negotiate.
It makes sense. As Cimini points out, the Jets should be in no rush to commit a large amount of money to McDonald. Through three years in the NFL, the former Iowa State standout has proven to be a solid pass rusher, but has weaknesses in other areas, like defending the run.
Mougey should wait and see McDonald's fit in the new defensive scheme the Jets are planning to run this season before deciding whether or not he should be with the team long term.
