Titans turn to rookie linebacker as Cedric Gray replacement in Jets opener

The New York Jets received a stroke of good luck earlier in the week when it was revealed that Tennessee Titans linebacker Cedric Gray was entering the concussion protocol ahead of their Week 1 matchup, as reported by ESPN's Turron Davenport.

Of course, it's terrible news for Gray, who was involved in a UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) accident. Davenport confirmed that there was no alcohol or reckless driving involved in the incident. Just an unfortunate series of events for the third-year defender.

There was some thought that Gray may have had a chance to clear protocol before Sunday's opener. But three straight days of DNPs on the Titans' injury report all but confirm the 23-year-old will be inactive against the Jets.

It should give New York a major advantage in the run game. Gray was the NFL's fourth-leading tackler in 2025, recording 164 total tackles. According to Pro Football Focus, he was also the league's second-best run defender, recording a grade of 92.7. Expect a heavy dose of Breece Hall behind the Jets' staunch offensive line.

In place of the injured Gray, second-round draft pick Anthony Hill Jr. is expected to get the starting nod. The former Texas standout was initially supposed to be easing his way into the speed of the NFL, but injuries have thrust him into the spotlight sooner than expected.

"It should be fun," Hill said via team reporter Jim Wyatt. "Just getting out there, getting my first experience... Just about executing and doing your job, and I'm sure I'll be fine."

The 21-year-old Hill sounds excited about his upcoming opportunity, despite the challenges that may come with it. It's hard for any player to come off the bench in a spot start, let alone a rookie, but the youngster has had some assistance along the way.

Titans head coach Robert Saleh told reporters on Friday that Hill has learned a lot from veteran linebacker Cody Barton and reiterated his belief in Tennessee's linebacking core.

"I love our linebacker room. I think we have five legit starters," Saleh said via the team website. "That group has really stepped up and we'll be fine."

Regardless of how Saleh feels, linebacker is a clear point of emphasis for the Jets to attack. With the current expectations surrounding New York's offense, Week 1 will be a prime opportunity for them to plant their flag and show the rest of the league they're here to score points.
