Robert Saleh's Titans could be missing key defender against Jets in season opener

With less than a week to go until the start of the 2026 season, the New York Jets may have just been dealt some good luck ahead of their season-opening matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

ESPN's Turron Davenport reported on Monday evening that Titans linebacker Cedric Gray had been placed in the NFL's concussion protocol after a UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) accident. Davenport clarified that it was not a case of "reckless driving" and stated that there was no alcohol involved.

"Over the weekend, Cedric Gray was involved in a UTV accident in Tennessee and sustained a concussion and minor injuries," wrote the Titans' team statement. "We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol."

Considering the NFL's concussion protocol, there's a real possibility that Gray will be unable to suit up for Sunday's game against the Jets. While that's unfortunate for Tennessee's defense and Gray himself, it certainly doesn't hurt New York's odds in their season opener.

Titans could be without their best linebacker in Week 1 vs. New York Jets

Gray is easily the Titans' best linebacker and could even be considered one of the rising stars at his position in the league. The 2024 fourth-round draft pick is coming off a breakout season in which he recorded 164 total tackles, the fourth-most in the NFL.

According to Pro Football Focus, Gray was the seventh-best linebacker in the league during 2025, earning an overall grade of 78.9. His biggest area of strength was his run defense, with a grade of 92.7. That was second-best in the entire league.

It's certainly an area where the Jets will be able to attack, especially due to the fact that the backup plan behind him seems to be veteran linebacker Owen Pappoe, according to the team's depth chart. The 49-game veteran was with the Arizona Cardinals this summer, but was waived as part of 53-man roster cuts.

The Jets are already going to be a run-heavy team in 2026. After all, their offensive line and stable of running backs are arguably the best parts of their entire team. Expect a heavy dosage of Breece Hall when New York travels to Nashville this weekend.

In the meantime, hopefully Gray returns soon. Concussions are no joke, and it's a shame he may not be available for the start of what is hoped to be a very promising third year in the league.
