The New York Jets appear to be entering a very monumental decision point in their recent franchise history, as they will need to decide which of the trio of pass rushers between Ohio State's Arvell Reese, Texas Tech's David Bailey, and Miami's Rueben Bain Jr. fits the bill for them.
The big concern surrounding Bain relates to his arm length, as his lack of gangly limbs might make it tough for him to consistently win with leverage and power against NFL-level tackles. That will certainly be at the back of Darren Mougey's mind.
At least, one would think that it would be at the forefront of Mougey's interrogation process. To hear Bain himself say it, those freaking out about his length are not the same people who are making decisions in NFL front offices.
Bain said that he does not pay attention to any of the doubts regarding his length, saying that those discussions are more a byproduct of social media. Bain said that none of the teams that met with him at the Combine asked about his arm length, which could be a sign that this is not that big of a deal in the eyes of many.
Jets target Rueben Bain Jr. says NFL teams don't care about arm length
Bain's arms aren't just short. They are historically short for someone who is getting first-round buzz. In recent history, Philadelphia Eagles great Brandon Graham is the only player with arms within a few half-inches of Bain's (30 7/8 inches) who was both picked high and made good on his potential.
Bain could seemingly be a defensive version of New England Patriots tackle Will Campbell. Even though he had a solid rookie season, his lack of arm length managed to get exposed in the postseason and put a hard cap on his overall ceiling. Could Bain be in for a similar ride?
The one saving grace for whoever ends up selecting Bain is the thought that he may be the safest player in this class. With expert run defense skills, a full array of pass rush moves, and a rabid mindset that allows him to full-speed on every play, Bain is as high-floor as it gets.
Bain is still very much in contention for the No. 2 pick, and if the arm length is not a problem, he might end up beating out someone like Reese or Bailey in Mougey's mind.
