The New York Jets had a problem last year. Despite not playing since Week 6, superstar wide receiver Garrett Wilson managed to lead the team in receiving yards with 395.
That just isn't okay for an NFL offense, and general manager Darren Mougey made a massive mistake allowing his team to enter the 2025 season with Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard as the complementary players to Wilson.
Mougey's midseason trade acquisitions were solid. Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie breathed some life into an otherwise stagnant room, but there's still more work to be done. Mitchell is an incredible separator, but he may be better suited as the No. 3 option as opposed to your WR2.
Is there a player out there on the free agent market that the Jets could bring in as the "Robin" to Wilson's "Batman"?
49ers' Jauan Jennings could be perfect sidekick for Jets' Garrett Wilson
The San Francisco 49ers aren't going to be able to retain all of their free agents this offseason, and that could lead to wide receiver Jauan Jennings shaking free and hitting the open market.
If that's the case, the Jets should absolutely be all over him as a cost-effective, consistent sidekick to their WR1, Wilson.
The 2020 seventh-round pick out of Tennessee has spent the last five years in San Francisco and has been a consistent pass-catching threat for Kyle Shanahan and his offense. Over his 49ers career, Jennings has caught 210 passes for 2,581 yards and 22 touchdowns.
This past season, he hauled in a career-high nine touchdowns, and hopes to cash in. Spotrac projects the 28-year-old to land a three-year, $67.8 million contract, a deal the Jets could certainly facilitate.
As a complement to Wilson's uncanny ability to get open, Jennings could be a reliable target for whoever the Jets land as their quarterback in 2026. According to Pro Football Focus, the former Volunteer had only three drops this past season on 88 targets for a drop rate of only 3.4%.
It doesn't matter who the Jets have at quarterback next season if he doesn't have the weaponry to succeed, and a potential Jennings addition would go a long way in improving the outlook of the offense.
Aside from 11 games of Davante Adams in 2024, Jennings would be the best running mate Wilson's had in his career as a Jet, and should allow a lot more one-on-one opportunities for the former Ohio State Buckeye.
