The New York Jets have done plenty to make themselves the target of easy mockery over the last decade and change, but there are some occasions where their status as an NFL laughingstock has led to them getting roasted by the wider media and fans online when it doesn't always warrant it.
Look no further than how the Jets' quarterback room is being discussed. Not only is Geno Smith apparently the worst possible option, according to social media, but the only one in contention for that title would be Russell Wilson.
The Jets have reportedly made an offer to Wilson to be their veteran backup quarterback behind Smith and ahead of rookie Cade Klubnik in the 2026 season. Wilson is deciding between accepting this offer or retiring, taking Matt Ryan's spot as a CBS analyst along the way.
The Jets have inadvertently set up another "LOL Jets" moment for themselves when it doesn't warrant it. If Wilson stays, they'll be mocked for signing someone who social media believes is at Nathan Peterman's level as a passer. If he goes to TV, fans will love to point out that Wilson chose CBS over the Jets.
Russell Wilson decision will set Jets up for more mockery
Wilson is clearly not the fringe Hall of Famer he was in Seattle, but he should be able to operate a professional offense. If Aaron Glenn and Frank Reich get subpar play out of Geno Smith, Wilson wouldn't be as much of a white flag waive as throwing out a developmental rookie in Klubnik.
The veteran options outside of Wilson are incredibly thin. The Jets can pick from another greybeard mulling retirement in Jimmy Garoppolo, someone in Cooper Rush that was absolutely abysmal last season, and Josh Dobbs, who got beat out by Tommy DeVito for the QB2 job in New England.
The Jets may not be a very good team, but the moves they made this offseason should not necessarily be viewed through the "LOL Jets" prism. Between a well-received NFL Draft class, some veteran additions like Demario Davis and Minkah Fitzpatrick on defense, and the upgrade at quarterback, Darren Mougey is making some wise decisions.
Wilson would be a solid QB2 option if he signed with any other team despite the noise he brings. Of course, because the Jets are signing him, Wilson is going to be viewed as a pariah. Par for the course in Florham Park.
