Anyone who has been in a relationship knows exactly the game that former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is playing.
Saleh will make his debut as the Tennessee Titans’ head coach in Week 1, hosting the Jets in Nashville.
Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Saleh made it clear that while he’s appreciative of the Jets, it’s also been nearly two years since they unceremoniously fired him.
“It’s to be expected with the NFL, but I don’t think anything of it,” Saleh said.
Whatever you say, Robert.
Robert Saleh isn’t fooling anyone with his thoughts about the Jets
Allow us to impart some wisdom onto you all.
If you need to make it clear that you don’t feel a certain way, then you’re making it clear that, yes, you do feel that way.
We don’t even need to provide a specific example, not when Saleh just demonstrated it in real time.
If Saleh really wasn’t thinking about his first game against the Jets, then he wouldn’t have needed to tell us as much.
The best thing that Saleh could have done is omit that line entirely from what he said only seconds prior:
"I’ve said it before, I’m appreciative of the Jets and everything that I had. It’s been over a year and a half now. In the NFL, it’s kind of like 10 years."Robert Saleh
That would have been the best possible response; short, simple, and genuine.
We didn’t need to hear, “I don’t think anything of it.”
It’s like Saleh went to the North Carolina edition of Bill Belichick’s school of passive-aggressive coach speak.
And, if Saleh does feel a certain way, then what would he have had to lose by admitting as much?
Sure, the Titans’ public relations staff likely wouldn’t have wanted to hear Saleh admit that, yes, of course, he’s thought about Week 1 and how he’s motivated by facing the Jets.
As Saleh noted, the last 19-plus months since he got his walking papers have flown by.
Given his luck, maybe the familiar feeling of walking into the locker room after a heartbreaking loss isn’t far off, either.
