Proposed Jets quarterback trade wouldn't be enough to save 0-7 season

Should the Jets trade for a QB?

The New York Jets are bad due to quarterback ineptitude once again, as Justin Fields' refusal to throw the ball downfield and Tyrod Taylor's penchant for turning the ball over have put a team that was already lacking in talent on the offensive side of the ball in an even more precarious situation.

It has become clear that the quarterback who could eventually help Aaron Glenn turn this team around is not on the roster right now. The Jets might be willing to at least consider the idea of trading for an upgrade, which could bring them back to an aging veteran.

Atlanta Falcons veteran Kirk Cousins has been considered as a possible trade target ever since he was benched for Michael Penix Jr. last season, and it seems as though Sporting News has become the latest in a growing line of prognosticators who are connecting the Jets to a possible Cousins trade.

The Jets won't make a noticeable improvement if they are able to acquire Cousins, which makes this move look even more questionable than ever before.

Jets won't save 0-7 season by trading for Kirk Cousins

While Cousins can get the ball put quickly, and the Jets' solid offensive line should help mitigate some of the issues with mobility he has shown of late, he is an expensive player who would not be in town for much longer. Trading for him in a lost season is not going to be the culture-changing move Glenn wants it to be.

If the Falcons are willing to discuss a trade in the offseason, as Cousins could serve as a veteran mentor for whoever the Jets select in the NFL Draft, then fair enough.

In the here and now, Glenn needs to win games, and a team that has built their identity around two mobile quarterbacks in Fields and Taylor shouldn't switch mindsets on the fly.

The Jets shouldn't tank on purpose to end the year, but they should put themselves in a very advantageous position to select a young quarterback that could possibly reverse this team's fortunes. Making a trade for another quarterback who is under contract for a few more seasons wouldn't be ideal roster building.

Trading for Cousins would have been a move worth discussing before the Fields acquisition. For the next few weeks, the Jets need to lie in the bed they made after yet another offseason quarterback move that didn't work out.
