Today is a great day to be a NY Jets fan. The Jets have reportedly signed star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to a four-year, $96 million extension that includes $66 million in guarantees.
The deal makes Williams the second-highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL and the highest-paid player in Jets history. In essence, Williams got exactly what he wanted.
He got the money. He got the guarantees. He got the years. Williams received the exact deal he was looking for, but the Jets are also winners here.
The Jets managed to lock up their superstar defensive tackle for the foreseeable future, and they did so before training camp. They developed a homegrown top draft pick into legitimately one of the best defensive players in football.
Now, that superstar will continue to call Florham Park home. What a great day for Williams and the entire Jets organization.
The Quinnen Williams extension is a historic moment for the NY Jets
This marks the first time the Jets have handed a second contract to a first-round pick since Muhammad Wilkerson, who the team drafted all the way back in 2011.
It's also the first Jets draft pick that general manager Joe Douglas has re-signed to a multi-year extension since he joined the team in 2019. For a franchise that has long struggled to develop and retain homegrown players, this is a monumental day for the organization.
Williams is exactly the kind of player you build a team around. He's one of the most dominant players at his position on the field and a beloved team leader off the field.
Many of his teammates have publicly displayed their support for Williams to receive his well-earned payday this offseason. Now, those same teammates are celebrating his new contract on social media.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh vowed to reporters last month that a Williams extension would get done before the start of training camp. The two sides cut it close, but with under a week to spare, a deal has been reached.
Quinnen Williams is a franchise cornerstone in every sense of the term. Both Williams and the Jets should be ecstatic about this outcome. Today, we celebrate!
