The NY Jets entered their Week 5 game against the Denver Broncos hoping to exact revenge against Sean Payton. Payton's comments about Nathaniel Hackett and the Jets this offseason rubbed many the wrong way, and the Jets were determined to seek vengeance.
They did just that, securing a thrilling 31-21 win over their opponents, helped by a late defensive stand against Payton's offense. After the game, the Jets' social media team made sure Gang Green got the last laugh.
The Jets tweeted out a photo of a stunned Kevin James, playing Sean Payton in the recent "Home Team" movie, with a caption that read, "When you lose to the offseason champs."
The meme was in direct response to Payton, who referred to the Jets as "offseason champs" in the midst of his tirade against Hackett earlier in the offseason. If the Jets are offseason champs, what does that make the Broncos?
The NY Jets got one over on Sean Payton and the Broncos in Week 5
Payton made this game personal for the Jets. Tight end C.J. Uzomah was seen firing up his team before the game with an impassioned speech in which he said some not-so-nice words about Payton and the Broncos.
The Jets made Hackett their honorary fourth team captain for the week and gave him the game ball following the team's win. Everyone in that locker room knew how much this meant to him and this entire organization.
Payton's words struck a nerve with the Jets players, who didn't take kindly to his unprompted shots this summer. Rather than fire back with words of their own, however, they took care of business on the field.
This was a must-win game for the Jets, both from a logistical and emotional standpoint. With a daunting Week 6 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles up next, the Jets could ill afford to fall to 1-4.
Much like they couldn't afford to let Payton have the last laugh.
The Jets locker room is laughing at Sean Payton. Jets fans are laughing at Sean Payton. Heck, even the Jets' social media accounting is laughing at Sean Payton.
Consider this revenge game a success.
