The NY Jets haven't had too many things to worry about through the first couple of weeks of training camp. Aside from Haason Reddick's continued holdout, the Jets have had a relatively quiet start to the summer.
But one of the more under-the-radar storylines coming out of Jets camp has been the issues surrounding starting center Joe Tippmann. More specifically, Tippmann has been having trouble snapping the ball to his quarterback.
The second-year center has consistently been snapping the ball high throughout training camp, with some of his snaps flying over the head of Aaron Rodgers. It's gotten to the point where it's become a genuine concern, and reporters have been asking head coach Robert Saleh about the developing situation.
Saleh doesn't seem concerned. The fourth-year head coach told reporters following Saturday's practice that Tippmann's snapping issues were "one of the least things worried about." He went on to explain why.
"We've got to continue working with it. [Tippmann] had a couple of good days, and then today with the heightened environment it got away from him, so we'll continue with him. It's technical stuff, it's not mental. He's not flustered. We're trying to maximize his athleticism which is asking him to do some things from an athletic standpoint. We're pushing him, and he's just got to learn the timing and the rhythm and all that stuff. He'll get it under control, it's one of the least things I'm worried about."Robert Saleh
The NY Jets should be concerned about Joe Tippmann's snapping issues
Despite Saleh's nonchalant response, this has become a situation that's impossible to ignore. Tippmann derailed an entire drive during the Jets' scrimmage on Saturday, snapping the ball well over Rodgers' head for a 20-yard loss.
It was the latest in a long line of miscues for the young center this offseason. Saleh insists the issue isn't mental and that it's a result of the Jets asking him to try out a new technique this summer. The bigger problem though is that this isn't a new story.
Tippmann notably struggled with his snaps last summer, the issue just flew under the radar because he wasn't working as the first-team center. His snap placement was also a problem during the season, although it definitely wasn't this bad.
Tippmann's snapping issues could be traced back to his college days. The future NFL second-round pick wasn't asked to snap much out of the shotgun formation at Wisconsin, as that's just not something they run very often, at least not while Tippmann was there.
It was a problem last year, and now that the Jets are seemingly asking him to do things differently, it's become an even bigger problem.
The good news is that Tippmann and the Jets still have over a month to sort through this issue and hopefully resolve the problem before Week 1. The whole idea of training camp is to work out kinks like this.
That said, concern is valid at this point. Tippmann's snapping issues aren't new and they don't seem to be going away. This is a situation that's worth monitoring as we draw closer to the regular season.
