NY Jets most likely NFL team to go from 'worst to first'
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets have finished dead last in the AFC East in each of the last three seasons. In fact, they haven't secured a top-two finish in the division since 2015 — eight years ago.
That all could change in 2023, however. At least, that's what the Jets hope and expect to happen.
Bleacher Report's Matt Holder recently ranked the odds of every last-place team in 2022 winning their division this season. Holder believes the Jets have the best chance to go from "worst to first."
In reality, it was an easy choice. The Jets finished ahead of teams like the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, and Denver Broncos, who, while improved, don't seem to be serious threats to win their division.
The Jets might not be the favorites to finish atop the AFC East, but they're absolutely in the mix. Few would be surprised if the Jets won their division this season — and it's been a long time since we've been able to say that.
Aaron Rodgers and the NY Jets can absolutely win the AFC East in 2023
It's been over two decades since the Jets have finished in first place in their division. Not since the 2002 season have the Jets won the AFC East. Rookie running back Israel Abanikanda was only a few months old when the Jets last earned a division title.
The offseason addition of Aaron Rodgers, however, has Jets fans more optimistic for the upcoming season than at any point in recent memory. Rodgers joins a young and talented skill position group and one of the best defensive units in the NFL.
From Sauce Gardner to Quinnen Williams to Garrett Wilson to Breece Hall, this Jets team is stacked with building blocks. In many ways, Rodgers was the missing piece to the Jets' roster puzzle.
"It takes watching maybe five minutes of Hard Knocks to know who the New York Jets' biggest offseason acquisition is. New York was pretty much just a quarterback away from being a playoff team a year ago, and it added arguably the most talented player at the position in league history with Rodgers."
- Matt Holder
The Jets' road to a division title won't be easy, of course. The Buffalo Bills remain one of the most talented teams in the NFL, and the Miami Dolphins are dark-horse contenders this year as well.
The AFC East is one of the toughest divisions in football, especially if the New England Patriots can continue to find ways to be competitive. Still, the Jets have every reason to believe that they will contend this season.
This is the most talented roster the Jets have boasted since their consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances over a decade ago. And this time, they have a future Hall-of-Fame quarterback leading the charge.
The Jets aren't guaranteed anything this season, but at least on paper, no team has a better chance to go from last place in their division to first place than they do.
