NY Jets fan helps recruit Mike Williams with breakfast sandwich
By Justin Fried
NY Jets fans are some of the most passionate and chaotic fans in the sports world. That much was on full display Tuesday morning when one notable fan sent a breakfast sandwich to the team's facility in Florham Park to help recruit free-agent wide receiver Mike Williams.
Yes, this is a real thing that happened.
Williams is reportedly visiting with the Jets Tuesday morning, and with many Jets fans hoping to strike a deal, some have taken extreme measures to give their favorite team a leg-up over the competition.
One such fan is notable Jets Twitter user, @NYJ_Matt. Matt ordered a breakfast sandwich to be delivered to One Jets Drive a little after 8 am ET on Tuesday. The specific message was to deliver the sandwich to Williams as a little recruiting gift.
This story doesn't end there, however. Matt took it upon himself to help navigate his DoorDash driver, named Vano, through the parking lot in an attempt to find a Jets security employee.
It worked. Not only was the sandwich delivered to a security guard, but it found its way inside the Jets facility where the organization's official social media account confirmed they received the package. Below is a look at the entire Jets sandwich saga.
NY Jets fans are going all out to recruit Mike Williams
The Jets are searching for wide receiver help this offseason, and the recently released Williams presents them with a golden opportunity to upgrade a major position of need.
Williams is coming off a torn ACL, but when healthy, the former first-round pick remains one of the better X receivers in the NFL. Williams has a pair of 1,000-yard seasons under his belt, with his best season coming in 2021 when he finished with 76 catches for 1,146 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Jets are looking to add a talented complement to Garrett Wilson in their receiving corps, and Williams' skill set makes him an ideal WR2 alongside the Jets' star wideout.
Williams finished with an outstanding drop rate of just 1.6 percent in 2022 — among the best in the NFL. His career drop rate of just 6.4 percent is well below average for his position.
Williams also ranked in the top five among all wide receivers with a 57.7 percent contested catch rate in 2023. He's never finished with a contested catch rate below 48.3 percent in a single season. Williams is one of the best contested-catch receivers in football.
The Jets are hoping to strike a deal with Williams, who has multiple other visits lined up this week, as soon as today. If Matt's breakfast sandwich endeavors help recruit Williams in any way, the Jets Twitter legend probably deserves some sort of reward from his favorite team.
Jets fans are lunatics in the best possible way.
