NY Jets announce the signing of former All-Pro kicker Greg Zuerlein

The NY Jets have seen a revolving door at the kicker position for the better part of the last half-decade or so, but they're hoping that Greg Zuerlein can be the player to buck that trend.

The Jets announced on Saturday that they had signed the former All-Pro kicker with the expectation that he will compete with the incumbent Eddy Pineiro who recently signed his $2.43 million restricted free agent tender.

Zuerlein is the most accomplished kicker the Jets have had in years as the 34-year-old has spent 10 years in the NFL with his most success coming from 2016-2018 with the Los Angeles Rams.

A former sixth-round pick, Zuerlein has an All-Pro season on his resume and should provide much-needed competition at the kicker position.

Zuerlein is a notable name in the kicking market and, at one point, he was considered to be one of the best kickers in football. He made over 90 percent of his field-goal attempts from 2016 to 2018 with his best season coming in 2017.

That season, Zuerlein connected on 38 of his 40 field-goal attempts and 44 of his 46 extra-point tries. It was enough to earn him his first and only Pro Bowl appearance as well as All-Pro honors.

Since then, Zuerlein's numbers have fluctuated. A disastrous 2019 season saw him depart to join the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. In two years with the Cowboys, Zuerlein's consistency remained an issue.

Somewhat remarkably, he made exactly 82.9 percent of his field-goal attempts in each of the last two seasons, although he has struggled with extra points. His 87.5 percent hit rate ranked dead-last in the NFL in 2021.

Still, it's nice to see the Jets bring in a proven commodity at the position as opposed to another undrafted free agent project. Zuerlein has prior NFL success and has proven that he can kick at least somewhat consistently in the NFL over the last decade.

This isn't a Matt Ammendola or a Chris Naggar. This is a former All-Pro who has been a kicker in the league for 10 years.

Besides, I seem to recall the Jets finding success with another former Cowboys Pro Bowl kicker. I'm not saying Greg Zuerlein is the next Nick Folk, but I'm also not not saying that.
