The NY Jets' offensive line was an unmitigated disaster in 2023. From countless injuries to inconsistent play, the Jets' offense was significantly hindered by the performance of the team's offensive line.
The Jets sought to correct that issue in the offseason, bringing in a trio of new starters to revamp what was one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. Part of their solution was bringing back former Jets tackle Morgan Moses in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens.
Tyron Smith is the team's swing-for-the-fences signing. In a perfect world, the Jets hope Smith can continue to be the All-Pro left tackle he was in 2023, but that largely hinges on his health.
John Simpson is the wild card of the Jets' offensive line. The former Las Vegas Raiders fourth-round pick is coming off a surprise breakout campaign in 2023, but only time will tell if he's more than just a fringe replacement-level player.
Moses, on the other hand, is the glue that holds everything together — a stable and durable veteran presence the Jets know they can rely on. In many ways, he's the most important piece of this offensive line.
Morgan Moses is the glue that holds the NY Jets' offensive line together
Moses has been the model of consistency and durability throughout his NFL career. The 10-year NFL veteran appeared in all 130 possible games between 2015 and 2022, serving as one of the most durable offensive linemen in football.
That durability took a hit in 2023 when he suffered a torn pectoral muscle early in the season, but despite the serious nature of the injury, Moses continued to play through the ailment, playing 14 of a possible 17 games and 69 percent of the Ravens' offensive snaps.
Moses underwent surgery to repair the injury in the offseason and is expected to be at full health for the start of the 2024 season. That's good news for a Jets offensive line that is already counting on a number of injury risks this year.
Smith hasn't played more than 13 games in a season since 2015 and right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker has played just 12 combined games over the last two years. The Jets need Moses to be a stabilizing presence on the offensive line.
He's not just a body either. Moses was genuinely one of the best right tackles in the NFL in 2023. The 33-year-old was one of just two tackles in the league not to register a single QB hit last season. His 24 pressures allowed were tied for ninth-best among all tackles to play at least 750 snaps.
Moses was also one of just five offensive tackles to earn a Pro Football Focus pass-block and run-block grade north of 75.0. The Jets aren't just getting a hopefully healthy contributor — they're getting a plus-starter.
On an offense riddled with question marks and injury risks, Morgan Moses is one of the few sure things. He's a steadying force amidst a sea of uncertainty. The value of that cannot be overstated.
