Mekhi Becton shows up to NY Jets training camp in excellent shape
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets officially reported for training camp on Tuesday, and among the more notable names in attendance was Mekhi Becton. Becton has been the recipient of plenty of criticism over the last few months, but he's looking to silence his doubters.
He's off to a good start too.
Becton has seemingly showed up to training camp in phenomenal shape with Brian Costello of the New York Post saying that the Jets "are excited about the shape he's in."
Connor Hughes, formerly of The Athletic, chimed in as well saying that Becton was "in incredible shape" and that he had received the message from the Jets coaching staff.
Despite countless rumors and criticisms over the last few months, Becton has seemingly shown up to camp healthy and motivated. He's ready to pick up where he left off following an encouraging rookie season.
The NY Jets are very happy with Mekhi Becton's conditioning
Becton came under heat this past spring after he opted not to attend the team's voluntary OTAs due to the impending birth of his first child. The pressure only mounted when Becton reportedly showed up out of shape for the Jets' mandatory minicamp period.
But in the six weeks between minicamp and training camp, Becton has clearly been putting in the work. The 23-year-old has "slimmed down," per his nutritionist Ann Claiborne, and his knee is "doing a lot better."
All of this is incredibly promising for a player the Jets are banking on staying healthy in 2022.
The Jets need Becton to return to his rookie form this season, especially given the team's lack of depth behind him. One injury would force a player like Conor McDermott, Chuma Edoga, or developmental rookie Max Mitchell into the starting lineup.
The team has been active in their search for additional tackle depth, but their top target, Riley Reiff, just signed with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday. Their remaining options are limited.
The Jets need Becton to not only stay healthy and in shape, but to pick up where he left off two years ago. Following a string of negative press this spring, it's incredibly uplifting to see Becton receiving widespread praise for his physical conditioning.
The success of the Jets' offensive line, in many ways, hinges on Mekhi Becton's health this season. This is a very encouraging development.
