Latest Haason Reddick update is positive as NY Jets finalize roster
By Justin Fried
As the NY Jets continue the process of finalizing their active roster, one notable player is expected to be absent from the initial 53-man roster. That player is star edge rusher Haason Reddick.
Reddick officially entered the 36th day of his holdout on Tuesday, surpassing the length of time of Darrelle Revis's infamous holdout during training camp in 2010. Fortunately for Reddick and the Jets, they don't have the Hard Knocks cameras documenting the holdout this time.
Still, despite his extended absence, the Jets remain optimistic that Reddick will not only report but be ready to suit up for Week 1. That was the sentiment shared by Jets head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday.
Saleh told reporters that there is still a path for Reddick to be active for the Jets season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in two weeks. Saleh spoke highly of his team's star edge rusher, insisting Reddick still had "plenty of time" to get ready.
NY Jets are optimistic Haason Reddick will be active in Week 1
The Reddick saga has dominated headlines for much of the Jets' offseason, with the former All-Pro seeking an extension as he enters the final year of his contract. The Jets aren't willing to engage in contract talks until Reddick reports and Reddick doesn't want to report without a new contract.
Hence we have a standoff.
The Jets are reportedly open to re-working Reddick's current deal, giving him added incentives and guarantees for the 2024 season, but the team has been reluctant to offer him a long-term extension.
It's unclear exactly what was agreed to at the time of the trade this past April, as both sides have differing accounts. What we do know is that the Jets and Reddick disagree about how to progress at this point.
Unfortunately for Reddick, he doesn't have much leverage in this situation. His trade request earlier this month rings hollow, given that reports suggest there isn't a team in the NFL willing to trade for Reddick and give him the contract he's seeking.
Reddick can't afford to hold out for the entire 2024 season or else he would remain under contract with the Jets in 2025. The most extreme path forward for Reddick would be to hold out until Week 10. But even then, how does that solve the issue?
The soon-to-be 30-year-old isn't going to get paid by sitting out this season. There's no tangible benefit to him missing regular-season games. In fact, the fines for missing practice get even steeper post-Labor Day.
That's why it seems probable that Reddick will eventually show up to the Jets' facility and likely work out a band-aid deal shortly after. That seems to be an ideal compromise for both parties.
If Reddick doesn't report by early next week, all bets are off. But right now, the Jets are optimistic he will be there and be in shape for Week 1.
