The Haason Reddick situation has officially reached a boiling point. The All-Pro pass rusher has officially requested a trade from the Jets following months of turmoil and contract negotiations.
Reddick has accumulated over $2 million in total fines after missing mandatory minicamp in June, over three weeks of training camp, and the team's first preseason game. Now, after contract talks stalled once again, he wants out.
The Jets traded for Reddick in early April, sending a conditional 2026 Day 2 pick to the Eagles in exchange for a player who openly wanted a new contract. Reports vary about what agreement Reddick and the Jets reportedly reached at the time of the trade.
By most accounts, Reddick reportedly told the Jets that he was willing to play out the final year of his contract without a long-term extension. His tone changed though, possibly around the time the team traded away John Franklin-Myers.
The Jets have seemingly made it clear that they have no plans to offer a long-term extension to their All-Pro pass rusher. Reddick isn't happy with their stance and wants out.
Will the NY Jets actually trade Haason Reddick?
SNY's Connor Hughes reported that the Jets told Reddick prior to training camp that there was "zero chance" he would be traded or released. It's unclear if the team's stance has changed at this point.
It does seem highly unlikely the Jets will consider it, however. Reddick doesn't really have any leverage in this situation. It's hard to imagine any team would be willing to pay Reddick the $27-30 million per year that he's looking to receive on a long-term deal.
The Jets also have no incentive to consider trading Reddick. In a worst-case scenario, they could let him sit out the entire season and recoup a compensatory draft pick, possibly as high as a third-rounder, next offseason. That would essentially make the trade a wash.
Of course, this is a Jets team that has Super Bowl aspirations in 2024. Reddick is one of the most talented players on the roster — the team needs him.
Ultimately, this is a last-ditch leverage play from Reddick. He's exhausted all of his options to this point. This is his final attempt to force the Jets to give him what he wants. It likely isn't going to work.
Regardless, this has become an incredibly messy situation for everyone involved. The Jets wanted to avoid distractions like this leading into this season. Unfortunately, here we are.
