Incoming NY Jets signings indicate Aaron Rodgers trade is coming next

The NY Jets and the NFL world remain on Aaron Rodgers watch as we enter the second day of free agency. While we still don't have an official confirmation of a Rodgers trade, all indications are that the Jets are expected to acquire the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

The most recent indications come in the form of two free-agent wide receivers that the Jets are reportedly targeting. The Jets appear to be nearing a deal for Allen Lazard, while they're also expected to have interest in Randall Cobb, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Lazard has spent the last five seasons with Rodgers in Green Bay and has strongly hinted at his desire to follow Rodgers to his next destination this offseason.

Meanwhile, Cobb has long been one of Rodgers' favorite targets. He's played 10 seasons with the Packers, reuniting with Rodgers after two years away in 2019 and 2020. It seems as though he wants to follow Rodgers to Florham Park.

The NY Jets trade for Aaron Rodgers should (hopefully) be announced soon

This is about as clear of an indication as we're going to get that the Jets expect to trade for Rodgers without it actually being announced. Lazard could make sense for the Jets as a target even without Rodgers, but that doesn't explain Cobb.

The soon-to-be 33-year-old wide receiver was rumored to potentially retire this offseason, and it seems unlikely that he would want to play with any other quarterback at this stage of his career. He's following Rodgers.

The fact that the Jets are in on both Lazard and Cobb should tell us all we need to know. Barring a completely unforeseen and sudden change, the Jets will be trading for Aaron Rodgers.

It's unclear when we might get official word — it appears the hold-up might be contractual right now — but it seems like a foregone conclusion that it's going to happen.

Lazard is your ideal replacement for Corey Davis as a big-bodied Z receiver, while Cobb is your Braxton Berrios replacement as a backup slot/WR4/potential punt returner.

The Jets are restocking their wide receiver corps with Packers free agents. That can only mean one thing — Aaron Rodgers is on his way to New York.
