Haason Reddick holdout feels inevitable ahead of NY Jets minicamp

The NY Jets have publicly insisted that they are not concerned about the status of former All-Pro pass rusher Haason Reddick, who was acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason. But despite what they say, there is reason to be concerned.

Reddick was not in attendance for voluntary OTAs this spring amidst rumors about a potential contract dispute. Jets head coach Robert Saleh suggested he was not aware of why Reddick was absent, but the reason seems pretty clear.

Reddick is entering the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract he signed prior to the 2022 season. More importantly, there is $0 in guaranteed money remaining on the deal. That's a dangerous situation for any player to be entering a season.

Perhaps more alarmingly, Saleh told reporters last week that he has not had any contact with Reddick this spring. Despite Saleh publicly stating that he expects to see Reddick at Jets mandatory minicamp, scheduled to run from June 11-13, there is mounting concern he won't be in attendance.

Reddick already forfeited $250,000 in workout bonuses by not showing up for OTAs. And when asked by the New York Post if he would be attending mandatory minicamp this week, Reddick declined to comment — multiple times.

To add to the growing concern, Reddick was reportedly the only member of the Jets' 91-man roster not in attendance for mandatory media day on Monday. That doesn't bode well for his odds of showing up for the start of minicamp on Tuesday.

The Jets would be able to find Reddick more than $50,000 for not attending this week's minicamp. If Reddick does not show up, that would officially signal the start of a holdout for the former first-round pick.

The Jets sent a conditional 2026 second/third-round pick to the Eagles this offseason to acquire Reddick after the team lost Bryce Huff in free agency. The understanding at the time was that Reddick would likely be seeking a new deal before the start of the season.

In fact, that's largely why the Eagles decided to trade him. It's unclear what the holdup might be, but reports have suggested Reddick could be seeking anywhere between $25 and $30 million per year on his new contract. That could make him the second-highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL behind only Nick Bosa.

The expectation is still that Reddick will be on the field for the Jets come Week 1, but if he does not attend mandatory minicamp, this situation will become an unnecessary distraction for an organization attempting to return to the postseason for the first time in 14 years.
