Final NY Jets injury report for Week 5 is good news for OL, bad news for DL
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets will make the trip across the Atlantic Ocean this Sunday as they take on the Minnesota Vikings in London. This Week 5 matchup promises plenty of intrigue, with Sam Darnold's possible revenge game dominating headlines.
Neither team will be at full strength, however, as the Jets and Vikings have each ruled out a player for Sunday's game. This is on top of the other injured reserve absences the teams are currently dealing with.
The Jets will obviously be without standout defensive end Jermaine Johnson who is out for the season with a torn Achilles. The Vikings won't have rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy and offensive guard Dalton Risner, who are each still on IR.
The Jets released their final injury report ahead of Week 5 on Friday, and while there was some positive news for the team's offensive line, the same can't be said about the defensive line.
NY Jets injury report Week 5
Position | Player | Injury | Game Status |
---|---|---|---|
OT | Morgan Moses | Knee | OUT |
DT | Leki Fotu | Hamstring | Doubtful |
LB | C.J. Mosley | Toe | Doubtful |
OT | Tyron Smith | Not Injury Related - Vet Rest Day | N/A |
OG | Alijah Vera-Tucker | Ankle | N/A |
QB | Aaron Rodgers | Knee | N/A |
The Jets have ruled out starting right tackle Morgan Moses for another week, although he did return to practice in a limited capacity on Thursday before being listed as a DNP on Friday for the team's practice in London.
Moses is making progress in his return and seems to be on track to play against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 6. For now, rookie Olu Fashanu will start again in his place at right tackle.
Linebacker C.J. Mosley is also expected to miss another game with a toe injury and has been listed as doubtful. Mosley suffered the injury during the Jets' Week 2 win over the Tennessee Titans and has been out since.
Jamien Sherwood has filled in for Mosley in the starting lineup and has performed well in his absence. Expect Sherwood to start again in London with Chazz Surratt filling the third linebacker role.
The Jets designated defensive tackle Leki Fotu to return from the injured reserve this week, opening his three-week practice window. There was optimism that Fotu would be able to play in Week 5 after he was a full participant in practice on both Wednesday and Thursday.
Unfortunately, the Jets downgraded Fotu to a limited participant on Friday and he's been listed as doubtful to play. Fotu was signed by the Jets this offseason to help improve the team's run defense. It looks like the team will wait at least one more week before activating him.
The real good news comes with starting right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, who popped up on the injury report with an ankle injury on Thursday and was a limited participant in practice.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh suggested that Vera-Tucker would be able to play when speaking to reporters this week, but given Saleh's track record with injury updates, that didn't exactly put Jets fans' minds at ease.
Thankfully, Vera-Tucker is off the injury report for Week 5 and was a full participant at Friday's practice. He will play against the Vikings with Xavier Newman and Jake Hanson serving as his primary backups.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was a limited participant on Wednesday as he deals with a knee injury but returned in a full capacity on Thursday. His status for Week 5 was never in question and he seems good to go for the London game.
The Jets' offensive line will have Vera-Tucker on Sunday, but the defensive line will be without their big nose tackle for another week. A mixed injury bag for the Jets heading into their fifth game of the season.
