Final NY Jets injury report for Week 2 makes Robert Saleh look foolish again

Saleh should just stop giving injury updates

NY Jets head coach Robert Saleh doesn't have a particularly strong track record of revealing accurate injury updates, and he added another slip-up to his long list of mistakes on Friday.

Saleh told reporters prior to Friday's practice that every Jets player — aside from defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, who was returning from having a baby this week— would be a full participant in today's practice. He insisted that all Jets players on the active roster would be able to play this weekend.

That might not be the case. Despite Saleh's seemingly positive update, the Jets' final injury report for Week 2 was released a few hours later, and cornerback D.J. Reed was listed as questionable with a knee injury. Reed did not practice on Friday.

The veteran cornerback was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday with what Saleh has described as "knee soreness." The Jets' head coach made it clear earlier this week that Reed's injury would not affect his chances of playing on Sunday.

Plans changed.

The Jets reportedly reevaluated Reed after Saleh's press conference earlier this morning and determined that he would not be able to practice today. Reed was seen working to the side with trainers for the duration of Friday's practice.

It's definitely concerning that Reed's knee injury seemingly went from an afterthought to an ailment that was notable enough to hold him out of practice and threaten his ability to play on Sunday.

If Reed were unable to play, the Jets would resort to the likes of Brandin Echols, Qwan'Tez Stiggers, and Jarrick Bernard-Converse to take his place. His injury is even more concerning, given that Michael Carter II is still nursing an ankle injury, although he's expected to play in Week 2.

Defensive lineman Micheal Clemons is also questionable with a triceps injury. Clemons was a full participant in Wednesday's practice before being downgraded to a limited participant on Thursday. He did practice fully on Friday, though, suggesting that he should be able to play this week.

Ashtyn Davis (ankle) and Mike Williams (knee) both appeared on the injury report but were full participants in practice all week. Their status is not in question entering Week 2.

Tyron Smith received his typical veteran rest day on Wednesday followed by a limited practice on Thursday. This is a part of the Jets' practice plan for the All-Pro left tackle. Javon Kinlaw missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday due to the birth of his child.

Reed's injury is worth monitoring over the next 48 hours as the Jets prepare for their Week 2 game against the Tennessee Titans. The lesson to take away from this is to never trust Robert Saleg with injury updates.
