The NY Jets limped out of their disappointing 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday a little worse for wear, both literally and figuratively. Just ask quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers and the Jets offense struggled to move the ball in the rainy conditions against a talented Broncos defense, mustering just nine points on the afternoon. The four-time MVP also appeared to suffer some sort of leg injury late in the game.
Rodgers was spotted getting worked on by trainers in the fourth quarter and was playing with a noticeable limp. Now, we have a clearer understanding of exactly what Rodgers was dealing with.
The future Hall of Famer revealed on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday that he's dealing with a swollen knee and that he's feeling "banged up" after taking some hits this past Sunday. That's not exactly what Jets fans want to hear ahead of a crucial matchup with the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5.
Aaron Rodgers injury update is a little concerning for the NY Jets
Rodgers appeared to injure his knee when he was rolled up on a sack with a little under five minutes remaining in Sunday's game. He remained in the game for the next series but was walking gingerly and wasn't moving as well. It was clear something was up.
The Jets have downplayed Rodgers' apparent injury, simply brushing it off as regular "wear and tear." Still, it's not ideal for your starting quarterback to be dealing with any sort of ailment, especially leading up to a matchup with a blitz-happy Vikings team.
Brian Flores's defense is notorious for sending extra defenders after the quarterback. The only team even in the same tier as far as blitz percentage is concerned is the Broncos, who blitz a whopping 49.7% of the time. Minnesota ranks second in the NFL with a 41.5 blitz percentage through four weeks.
Rodgers has, of course, played just four games since returning from a torn Achilles that caused him to miss essentially the entire 2023 season. His knee injury seems to be on the same leg, the left, where he previously tore his Achilles.
The Jets will continue to monitor his progress this week and we should gain a clearer understanding of the extent of his injury based on his status in practice on Wednesday. For now, however, it's fair to have some level of concern.
The Jets can ill-afford to have Rodgers miss any time due to injury this season. Tyrod Taylor is Rodgers' primary backup quarterback, but the Jets need their four-time MVP to win games.
This is a situation that bears monitoring over the coming days.
