It only took Aaron Rodgers 2 games to break this ridiculous NY Jets QB streak
By Justin Fried
To say the NY Jets have been starved for even semi-competent quarterback play in recent years — let alone in their franchise history — would be an understatement. That's why it might seem unbelievable to many Jets fans that Aaron Rodgers is currently throwing passes for their favorite team.
While Rodgers may not have looked like his former MVP self through the first two games of the 2024 season, the future Hall of Famer has already accomplished something that no Jets quarterback has in three years. Well, sort of.
Rodgers helped lead the Jets to a thrilling 24-17 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 2, finishing with 177 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-30 passing. In doing so, Rodgers helped the Jets snap a hapless 25-game streak of misery.
The Jets have now thrown multiple touchdown passes in consecutive games for the first time since Weeks 8 and 9 of the 2021 season. Of course, one of those touchdowns in Week 1 was thrown by Tyrod Taylor, but the point still stands. Rodgers is already making history.
The NY Jets have waited years for a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers
Rodgers' first touchdown pass as a member of the Jets came in Week 1 on a 36-yard strike late in the third quarter to old friend Allen Lazard. Taylor would later give Lazard his second touchdown of the night in garbage time with under two minutes remaining in the game.
But on Sunday, it was all Rodgers. The four-time MVP tossed touchdown passes to running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, allowing the Jets to secure a much-needed 24-17 win.
The last time the Jets had consecutive games with multiple touchdown passes was in the 2021 season. The first of those two games was the famous Mike White-Bengals performance in Week 8, while the latter came when Josh Johnson, in relief of an injured White, threw three touchdowns in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Six different quarterbacks have started at least one game for the Jets since those Week 8 and Week 9 games in 2021. None have been able to replicate that feat until now.
The bar has been so low with Jets quarterbacks that it hasn't taken much for Rodgers to raise the standard. Just a few perfectly placed passes over the first two weeks of the season have been enough to get Jets fans excited about the potential of this offense.
Rodgers isn't necessarily lighting it up. He's not playing at an MVP level. But the Jets don't need him to, especially not in his first two games back from an Achilles tear.
Rodgers is raising expectations for the Jets' quarterback position one game at a time. As long as No. 8 is upright and healthy this season, the Jets should have a chance to win every game.
