The New York Jets have been incredibly thin at wide receiver to start the 2026 season. Adonai Mitchell hasn't played since Week 2, veteran Tim Patrick went on injured reserve before the season even started, and rookie Omar Cooper Jr. was hurt on his first-ever catch against the Tennessee Titans.

Well, Cooper's minimum four-game stint on injured reserve is up, and head coach Aaron Glenn revealed on Wednesday that the first-round draft pick will be returning to practice this week.

It remains unclear if Cooper will be ready to go on Sunday in time for the Jets' Week 6 matchup against the New England Patriots, but news of his return is music to fans' ears. Everyone wants to see what this kid can do, and his early injury robbed folks of what New York's offense is capable of when it's firing at full capacity.

We'll have to wait a bit longer to see the trio of Garrett Wilson, Mitchell, and Cooper all on the field at the same time, but this is a welcome first step in the best possible direction.

Now, it should be made clear that just because Cooper will be back at practice this week doesn't necessarily mean he'll suit up in Week 6 against the Patriots. As a first-year player, it's possible Glenn will want him to get some practice reps under his belt before making his return to the field.

Glenn spoke about this at his press conference on Wednesday and compared Cooper's injury to fellow Hoosier draft pick D'Angelo Ponds' elongated absence over the summer.

"You never want any rookie to actually miss time because the reps are valuable for these guys. .. We had a number of guys that's been out of practice, Ponds one of them, all through training camp, and now he's just starting to get these reps right back. So for him to actually start to get these reps again, then get out there and be able to compete is big for us."

Regardless of Cooper's lack of reps over the last few weeks, fans are already somewhat aware of what the rookie wide receiver is capable of.

In his rookie debut, Cooper hauled in one pass against the Tennessee Titans and turned it into a catch-and-run for a 30-yard gain. His YAC ability was one of his biggest attributes coming out of college.

His return to the Jets offense should give Geno Smith a good safety valve and allow him to get the ball out quicker, negating some of the recent struggles he's had with holding the ball too long.
