NY Jets should target this veteran cornerback with ties to Aaron Glenn

The NY Jets enter the 2025 offseason with a handful of needs on both sides of the football. Over the next few months, New York will look to fill out this roster through free agency, draft, and potential trades.

After a dominant 2022 and 2023 season for the Jets defense, 2024 was a big regression, which has led to multiple needs arising. One of these needs includes help at cornerback with D.J. Reed set to leave in free agency; New York needs a new weapon alongside Sauce Gardner and Michael Carter II.

With Aaron Glenn taking over the reins as head coach, the Jets should already have veteran cornerback Carlton Davis on their radar.

NY Jets should target veteran CB Carlton Davis in free agency

After spending the first six years of his career with the Buccaneers, the Lions traded for Carlton Davis last offseason, where he played under Aaron Glenn as the defensive coordinator.

In 13 games played, Davis registered 56 total tackles, two interceptions, and 11 passes defended. The 28-year-old also tallied a 74.5 Pro Football Focus grade, which was a career high.

Davis also produced a 72.1 coverage grade, which tied his career high. The seven-year veteran remained stout against the run, posting a 77.7 run defense grade, which ranked well above average among cornerbacks in 2024.

When looking at the Jets' current cornerback room, the number two corner remains a question mark. The main depth includes Brandin Echols, who is set to hit free agency, and Qwan'tez Stiggers, who is still unproven.

While it's certainly possible Echols gets brought back in free agency, it would still be a smart move for Glenn and Mougey to bring in another veteran presence into the room.

Davis, the former 2018 second-round pick, has played 89 games in his career and has accumulated 380 total tackles, 11 interceptions, and 84 passes defended. His resume also boasts a Super Bowl ring.

Every new coach and regime has players that follow them to their new destinations. After spending a successful season under Glenn in Detroit, Davis would be a good veteran to add not only on the field but also in the locker room.
