NY Jets have no reason to trade Garrett Wilson despite reported interest

Teams are calling about a Garrett Wilson trade.

The NY Jets have one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL following the addition of Davante Adams last week. Adams joins Garrett Wilson in a talented Jets wide receiver room that rivals some of the best in the league.

Adams' arrival caused a ripple effect on the Jets' roster, one that is expected to see the team trade veteran wideout Mike Williams at some point in the future. Williams will be active for tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he appears to be on borrowed time in New York.

Teams are calling about Williams' availability, but he's not the only Jets wide receiver receiving trade inquiries. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Saturday night that the Jets have also received calls about Wilson's availability.

"A select group of NFL teams" have reportedly inquired about if the Jets would be willing to trade Wilson following the Adams deal. The Jets have, rather obviously, informed teams that they are not interested in trading Wilson at this time. And that's the way it should be.

NY Jets not interested in a Garrett Wilson trade despite receiving calls

Schefter notes that Wilson will be eligible for an extension as early as this coming offseason, and with the ever-expanding wide receiver market, the Jets will likely have to pay a hefty price to keep him.

The addition of Adams could complicate matters, especially if the Jets re-work his deal in the offseason with the goal of keeping him around for a few more years. It might be challenging to fit both Wilson and Adams under the salary cap.

The Jets have a number of big-money contracts to consider in the near future, with players like Sauce Gardner, Breece Hall, Jermaine Johnson, and Quincy Williams all in line for significant pay raises.

That said, there's absolutely no reason to even entertain the idea of a Wilson trade right now. Wilson remains one of the foundational building blocks of this Jets roster, and at just 24 years old is both a core piece of the present and future.

It would be roster-building malpractice to trade for an aging 31-year-old wide receiver, only to turn around and dispose of your 24-year-old stud receiver. It's hard to imagine a scenario in which general manager Joe Douglas would consider that.

At the very least, the Jets aren't going to trade away their young star wide receiver in a must-win, all-in season. It makes sense that teams might be following the breadcrumb trail to see if there's any reality the Jets would consider trading Wilson, but it's likely none of the rejected teams were particularly surprised.

The Jets are not going to trade Garrett Wilson. Jets fans don't have to worry about that.
