The 2024 season has been an unmitigated disaster for the NY Jets in almost every possible way, but one of the lone bright spots has been the performance of rookie left tackle Olu Fashanu.
Unfortunately, the Jets can never have nice things. Fashanu was carted off the field during Sunday's 19-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and was spotted using crutches after the game. The Jets are calling it a foot injury, but there hasn't been much in the way of updates to this point.
Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich told reporters after the game that Fashanu was in pain following the injury but that it was too early to speculate on the extent. The early prognosis isn't encouraging, though.
ESPN's Rich Cimini did confirm Sunday night that Fashanu's injury is not Achilles-related, so the Jets seem to have avoided the worst-case scenario. It's a foot injury — one that seems likely to end Fashanu's rookie season prematurely.
Other NY Jets news:
Allen Lazard's drop issues continue
Allen Lazard has an issue with drops — we knew this already. His inconsistent hands were a large reason for his disaster of a season in 2023, and while he's shown more flashes of the Green Bay version of Lazard this year, the drops have still been an issue.
Lazard dropped a pair of passes in Sunday's loss to the Rams, bringing his total to a whopping nine on just 54 targets this season. Only two players, CeeDee Lamb and Courtland Sutton, have registered more drops in 2024. Remember, Lazard has only played 10 games this year.
He's recorded an atrocious 16.6 percent drop rate in 2024 — a figure that ranks second-worst among wide receivers with at least 40 targets. Believe it or not, that's technically an improvement! Lazard led all qualified receivers with an abysmal 17.9 percent drop rate last season.
The ex-Packers wide receiver will have two more games to make a lasting impression in what is almost certainly his final year in Florham Park.
Jets make inept history in Week 16
The 2024 New York Jets are the undisputed kings of finding ways to lose, and Sunday's game was further proof of that. The Jets dominated time of possession, controlled the line of scrimmage, out-gained their opponents by a sizable margin, and didn't punt a single time.
Despite all of that, the Jets managed to somehow score just nine points in a double-digit loss. Such a feat shouldn't be possible, but that's the Jets for you. How improbable was their performance? I'm glad you asked.
The Jets became just the second team since 1940 (!) to not punt in a game and score fewer than 10 points. The only other occurrence came in Week 1 of the 1991 season when the Colts managed just seven points in a 16-7 loss to the New England Patriots.
The Colts would go on to finish 1-15 that season with their only win coming against...the Jets. It doesn't get much more poetic than that.
