The 2024 season hasn’t gone as planned for NY Jets running back Breece Hall. Once part of a team with Super Bowl aspirations, Hall has watched the Jets spiral into one of the NFL’s laughingstocks while his own production on the field has taken a hit.
The Jets enter Week 16 with a 4-10 record having already been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. It's been a difficult season — or really a few seasons — for Hall and the Jets, and the losing might be starting to take its toll.
In a recent Instagram post, Breece Hall shared a cryptic caption that read "#Free20," sparking widespread concern and speculation among Jets fans. The vague nature of the post has led many to wonder if Hall is expressing frustration with the team's struggles or hinting at deeper dissatisfaction with the organization.
Hall is currently nursing a knee injury that has cut into his playing time as of late. He played a season-low 48 percent of snaps in the Jets' Week 15 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars two weeks after a season-low 62 percent of snaps in Week 12.
Is Breece Hall unhappy with the NY Jets?
It's unclear if Hall's post is a sign that he's unhappy with the Jets' struggles or his individual usage, but his cryptic caption has definitely raised eyebrows. Fans are left to wonder if Hall is subtly expressing frustration with his role, the team's performance, or both.
Hall returned from injury in 2023 to put together one of the best seasons by a Jets running back in franchise history. The former Iowa State star finished fourth among all NFL players in total scrimmage yards. trailing only Christian McCaffrey, Tyreek Hill, and CeeDee Lamb.
All three of those players were part of top-five offenses. Hall and the Jets ranked 31st in total offense at the conclusion of the season. Hall was the Jets' offense in 2023.
His production and efficiency have taken a step back this year. After averaging 5.8 yards per carry as a rookie and 4.5 yards per carry last season, Hall is averaging just 4.2 yards per rush in 2024. He's also seen his receiving production slip a little.
More notably, Hall has had serious issues with ball security this season. The former second-round pick had fumbled just three times in his career entering 2024. He's fumbled six times in 13 games this year.
Combine that with an offseason injury that kept him out of OTAs and minicamp, followed by a midseason setback to his surgically repaired knee, and it's clear that this has been a frustrating year for Hall.
The Jets have seen promising play from rookie running backs Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis, which has sparked some speculation about Hall’s future in New York. While there’s no solid foundation for those claims at this time, Hall’s provocative social media post has certainly added fuel to the fire.
Breece Hall remains one of the cornerstones of the Jets' organization and should be seen as a building block of the future. That said, his recent social media activity has understandably caused concern among fans.
Jets fans might be ready to free 20 — just as long as it's on the field and not on another team.
