The NFL is a league of constant turnover. New coaches and general managers come in, and depth chart regulars are suddenly on the hot seat.

The New York Jets look to be set for plenty of turnover this offseason, especially on offense. One wide receiver who has carved out a role for himself over the past couple of years could be one of the first casualties.

Jets receiver Xavier Gipson might be on the way out

The wide receiver position isn't exactly a strength for the New York Jets. Outside of Garrett Wilson, there's not much to hang a hat on. Still, wide receiver Xavier Gipson may not make it through training camp.

Gipson has had a unique football journey so far. He received minimal offers as a two-star high school recruit, landing at Stephen F. Austin University in his home state of Texas. Gipson was productive during his collegiate career, but he went undrafted in 2023.

After landing with the Jets as an undrafted free agent, Gipson was able to not only make the final roster but also play a significant role in the offense. In his rookie season, he had 21 catches for 229 yards and played plenty of snaps on special teams.

But his role began to diminish in his second season. In 2024, Gipson only earned ten total targets. He played almost exclusively on special teams as a return man.

With head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey now at the helm, Gipson may be seen as expendable.

While the Jets' receiving corps isn't particularly talented, it's full of players who could contribute. Garrett Wilson, Josh Reynolds, and Allen Lazard are expected to hold starting roles. Behind them, it's a free-for-all for the last few roster spots.

Many NFL teams only include six or seven wide receivers on their final roster. If that's the case with the 2025 New York Jets, it'll be a heated competition to avoid being cut.

The Jets spent a fourth-round pick this year on former Georgia wide receiver Arian Smith, who is a track star in shoulder pads. Last season, they drafted versatile wideout Malachi Corley in the third round. New York signed former Rams receiver Tyler Johnson in free agency this offseason. UDFA Jamaal Pritchett has already made an impact in minicamp.

The New York Jets' wide receiver room has quickly become very crowded. Xavier Gipson brings unique value to the table with his return capabilities, but that may not be enough to earn him a roster spot. Gipson will need to show he deserves to stay when training camp kicks off later this month.
