After the decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers, the NY Jets will now focus on figuring out the plan at QB for 2025. It is still unknown who the starter will be and which route the Jets will take, but one thing that is known is new senior football advisor Rick Spielman's view on QB prospect Jaxson Dart.
On Sunday, ESPN's Rich Cimini broke down comments made by Rick Spielman after the Senior Bowl on his CBS Sports podcast. The longtime NFL executive came away "impressed" by Dart at the Senior Bowl, praised his "arm talent," and felt that Dart commanded the "smoothest, and quickest release."
Spielman also noted the possibility of Jaxson Dart rising up draft boards over the next few months, similar to Bo Nix last year. Jets GM Darren Mougey knows very well about Bo Nix's rise last year and his rookie season success as the assistant GM with Denver at the time.
Jaxson Dart is an intriguing option for the NY Jets at QB
After spending his freshman season at USC, Jaxson Dart transferred to Ole Miss for the 2022 season. The 21-year-old has started each of the past three seasons for Ole Miss, leading the team to three bowl game appearances and two bowl game wins.
In 2024, Dart completed 69.3% of his passes for 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also posted a 180.7 passer rating. Dart's completion percentage, yards, touchdowns, and passer rating were all career highs.
Jaxson Dart enters the draft with a high ceiling, headlined by his impressive arm strength and accuracy. However, his floor is unknown and raises some concerns. One of the biggest questions about Dart entering the draft is how he would handle an NFL offense and the overall NFL game.
During his time at Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin's offenses featured a heavy dose of predetermined/one-read plays. This has raised questions about Dart's ability to adjust in the NFL on plays with multiple reads or if he faces pressure.
Assuming the Jets go with the veteran stopgap route in 2025, Dart is an intriguing option for New York to potentially sit and learn for a year in Tanner Engstrand's system.
Between Mougey seeing Nix's success in Denver and Spielman liking Dart as a prospect, it is becoming increasingly possible that Gang Green could make a strong push for the Ole Miss product come April.
