The NY Jets are officially getting out of the Aaron Rodgers business after just one season, as all the rumors seem to suggest that New York is going to either trade or release the future Hall of Famer. New head coach Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey now have a clean slate to work with.
The Jets are in a tough spot after this move. With Justin Fields likely being the most realistic free agent target this team could chase and the consensus top two quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft (Miami's Cam Ward, Colorado's Shedeur Sanders) out of reach, the Jets may lean on veteran Tyrod Taylor to start in Week 1 of the Glenn era.
If the Jets want to restart the clock with a younger quarterback, the idea of drafting Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart may be more appealing after he shined at the Senior Bowl, Dart has seemingly overtaken Alabama's Jalen Milroe and established himself as the third-best quarterback in this class.
The Jets may need to move up to either the late first-round or early second-round space if they want a crack at Dart, but he would give this team a plan for the future that doesn't involve essentially punting on 2025 with Taylor as the unchallenged starter.
Aaron Rodgers news opens the door for NY Jets to draft Jaxson Dart
Dart is going to be a tough sell for many teams due to his juvenile Ole Miss offense that doesn't even resemble NFL football. With an abundance of predetermined throws and half-field reads, it is similar to those old Baylor programs that produced luminaries like Bryce Petty.
While that is a concern, along with his decision-making once he gets pressure in his face, Dart has all the other tools needed to become a high-end quarterback in the right system. Dart, who threw for just under 4,300 yards and 29 touchdowns last season with the Rebels, has the arm strength to make any and all throws on the field.
Dart showcases tremendous playmaking with his legs, deadeye accuracy on short and intermediate throws from the pocket, and the willingness to deliver a ball while absorbing contact. With a year of tutelage under Tyrod Taylor and Tanner Engstrand, Dart could get up to speed and run a professional offense.
The Jets can't claim to be serious about building a winning culture if Taylor is the Week 1 starter without a long-term backup marinating behind him. He isn't perfect, but Dart's ceiling is high enough to become a quality starter at the professional level.
