The most irritating Aaron Glenn narrative has returned amid the Jets’ positive vibes

Jets players likely won’t want to participate in this conversation.

Injuries aside, the New York Jets’ summer has been refreshingly optimistic. Positive buzz is building around the roster that Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey have built, especially with Adonai Mitchell and David Bailey dominating throughout training camp.

Good vibes only last so long, though, and the pressure has been on Glenn from the moment that ownership opted to bring him back for a second season. For as beloved and respected as he is among players, the former Pro Bowl defensive back must prove that he’s worthy of being an NFL head coach.

CBS Sports’ Zachary Pereles agreed, naming Glenn as the Jets figure in the hottest seat entering the 2026 season.

“He’s rightfully getting another year to get things moving in the right direction, but if it’s a disaster again, he won't get a third chance,” Pereles wrote. “The Jets have brought in significant defensive help, and that’s Glenn’s area of expertise.”

Should New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn be on the hot seat?

CBS Sports analysts have been arguably the Jets’ most vocal critics, including pushing what can only be interpreted as a clear anti-Garrett Wilson narrative. It’s almost shocking that Pereles didn’t mention the 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year.

That said, it’s hard to disagree with the idea that Glenn should be in the hot seat. By now, we all know about the Jets’ interception drought and how dreadful they looked over the final month. Brady Cook made fans yearn for the days of Bryce Petty and Mike White.

Whether or not Glenn is the Jets figure in the hottest seat, though, is an interesting conversation. Geno Smith likely wouldn’t work because he’s essentially on a one-year contract. Ownership seems committed to Mougey, especially with how positive the feedback on his team-building strategies has been.

By that point, you start getting into veteran players like Josh Myers, though it’s difficult to envision the Jets benching their starting center anytime soon. Bailey Zappe might have worked had Cade Klubnik not become the de facto backup quarterback, but even then, does anyone among the fanbase care about how hot Zappe’s seat has become?

Does that leave Glenn on his own? Probably. It’s nonetheless unfortunate timing because players have spent months raving about Glenn, largely because of his authentic, fiery personality. Veteran pass rusher Joseph Ossai even told reporters that Glenn’s enthusiasm regularly motivates players to the point where they want to “run through a wall” when he’s done speaking.

Not that much of it might matter if the Jets go 3-14 again, though. For now, all signs point to Glenn making it to Year 3 if there’s enough improvement on both sides of the ball, and a Week 1 victory over Robert Saleh and the Titans would certainly help things.
