One of the New York Jets' biggest offseason splashes was the Monday morning trade with the Miami Dolphins that landed safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

The Jets, who for far too long relied on stop-gap options and short-term band-aids on the backend of their defense, finally get a real player at safety in the three-time All-Pro Fitzpatrick. All it took was a seventh-round pick and a three-year, $40 million deal as he walked through the door.

Fitzpatrick, who was in the Jets facility on Thursday to take his physical, sign his contract, and meet with reporters, spoke about how cool it was to be back in the state he grew up in.

The 2018 first-round pick is a native of Old Bridge, New Jersey, and played high school football at St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City.

Speaking with the media for the first time since the trade, Fitzpatrick told reporters he was excited to be playing for the Jets, and "happy to be back home."

The former Alabama star said he has a lot of "flashbacks" being back in the Jets facility. As a kid, he attended youth camps in Florham Park. He even played his high school championship game at MetLife Stadium. To Fitzpatrick, it's a "full-circle moment" for his football career.

Fitzpatrick also noted his excitement to play for Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, a former NFL defensive back who had an illustrious 15-year NFL career.

"I'm really excited to play for coach. He's a guy who played high-level football in his life and his career. He sees the game in a similar manner to guys who play my position. He has that DB bias. I'm excited to play for him."

The Jets are banking on Fitzpatrick to be a leader and playmaker for their defense. Something they desperately lacked last year.

As everybody knows by now, the Jets went the entire 2025 season without hauling in a single interception. Fitzpatrick, who has 21 interceptions over his eight-year career, hopes to change that.

Fitzpatrick, before even playing a game for New York, is easily the best safety the Jets have had in a decade.
