Minkah Fitzpatrick's brutal comment made worse by Jets' laughable explanation

Spin of the century.

The New York Jets' defense was primarily at fault for the team's 38-33 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8, as Minkah Fitzpatrick and the defense were torn to pieces and failed to back up an offense that appears to be putting it together.

Fitzpatrick sounded like many of the former Jets players who wanted to change the culture, yet have become beaten down by losing, in his post-game media availability. Fitzpatrick said the team made "bad mistakes, bad penalties" and called it "Jets being Jets." The team's PR tried to explain that away in comical fashion.

The team stated that Fitzpatrick's actual quote mentioned "Jets beating Jets" rather than "being." No, they were saying Boo-urns! Using the phrase "only the Jets" is often lazy analysis when examining the many ways in which this franchise stinks, but the term applies perfectly here.

New York Jets embarrass themselves with comical explanation to Minkah Fitzpatrick quote

Fitzpatrick has been a solid player when healthy this season. After all, he has the only interception of the 25-game Aaron Glenn era. However, anyone hoping that he could have the same transformative impact on the defensive side of the ball has been a bit let down, and the rest of his defense isn't doing him any favors.

Fitzpatrick himself didn't have a particularly good game, as Kirk Cousins shredded the Jets' secondary, with Brock Bowers having one of the best games of his career. The team is 2-6 and as demoralized as ever, as the Jets lost back-to-back home games against beatable opponents.

The PR spin on that quote was perhaps even worse than the quote itself. Fitzpatrick, for as downtrodden and gloomy as he sounded, wasn't telling any lies. The Jets had the game in their hands after ripping the Raiders' defense apart. Fitzpatrick is just one part of a unit that showed no interest in making life hard on Cousins and Las Vegas.

Minkah Fitzpatrick and the New York Jets' defense let the team down

What makes this loss even more frustrating, on top of the fact that Glenn appears not to have adapted his play-calling and is profiled as a subpar defensive mind, is the fact that the offense has some solid talent. For the first time in what feels like forever, the Jets are moving the ball and being let down by a subpar defense.

The Jets put up 33 points in this game, and that came with breakout rookie Omar Cooper Jr. not even being targeted. Frank Reich's struggles in the red zone prevented the Jets from reaching 40 points in a home win, yet Fitzpatrick and the secondary could not hold up their end of the bargain.

The Jets are right back where they started when they hired Glenn. The team has won five games over the last 25 appearances; the defense is seemingly starting to succumb to the "Same Old Jets" mope, and Glenn is all but assured to be fired. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?
