The New York Jets are officially spiraling. Aaron Glenn, who dropped to 5-20 as head coach of the team he once played for, has likely run out of whatever rope he had left after losing to the Miami Dolphins in Week 7.
During Sunday's Week 8 defeat at the hands of the Las Vegas Raiders, Glenn's defense couldn't buy a stop. Against a team that was riding a four-game losing streak, the Jets made them look like one of the league's most unstoppable offenses.
The Raiders' offense was 7-of-11 on third downs, with Kirk Cousins routinely finding tight ends Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer for key conversions. The 38-year-old veteran, who found himself at the center of benching conversations this past week, compiled four total touchdowns.
Where do the Jets go from here? How is it that the same problems seem to rear their ugly head every week? Is there even an easy fix?
Aaron Glenn's New York Jets are losing control of the 2026 season
In his post-game press conference, a defeated Glenn stood at the podium and fielded questions yet again about his team falling short.
"Listen, I can sit here and talk about how close we are, but that's not going to do us any good at all. We got to improve. We got to improve to make sure that we get on the other side of that. One thing I can say is, man, our guys play with effort."
After comments this past week from Ashton Jeanty that questioned the Jets' effort on defense, it felt like the perfect opportunity to send a message that the team still cared and was fighting to keep their season alive.
As Glenn said, you can't say the Jets don't try, but it just feels like they are routinely not put in a position to succeed. That's an indictment of the head coach and his staff.
Not only did Glenn's defense fail to make any plays when it mattered, but the special teams continue to be a major problem for this Jets team.
Chris Banjo, who was considered to be a rising head coaching candidate after the 2025 season, may find himself out of a job sooner rather than later. In typical Jets fashion, they gave up the first and only kick return touchdown of the 2026 NFL season thus far to Dylan Laube.
It's unclear if we're going to get to a point where the Jets need to fire Glenn mid-season, but with each passing loss, it must be getting harder and harder for Woody Johnson to not pull that trigger.
