The NY Jets made one of the most high-profile midseason trades the NFL has seen in years on Tuesday, acquiring star wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders.
While the Adams trade is certainly good news for the Jets' postseason hopes, it's not necessarily good news for every player on the roster. One such player who now finds himself on the outside looking in is Mike Williams.
The former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver has become the odd man out in the Jets' wide receiver room and is expected to be shopped ahead of next month's trade deadline.
Not only that, but it seems very possible that Williams has already played his final game as a member of the Jets, at least according to a report from uSTADIUM.
The report states that not only are the Jets expected to trade Williams in the near future but that it's possible he's made a healthy scratch on Sunday if the team is not able to trade him before then. This aligns with similar reports about Williams' expected departure.
NY Jets expected to trade Mike Williams
Williams signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Jets in the offseason and was expected to provide much-needed depth to the team's wide receiver room. Unfortunately, he's hauled in just 10 catches for 145 yards through six weeks.
Part of that is because Williams was on a snap count to begin the year and didn't become a featured piece of the offense until a few weeks ago, but it's become increasingly apparent in recent weeks that he and Aaron Rodgers are not on the same page.
Williams has now fallen down in apparent miscommunications leading to game-sealing Rodgers interceptions in consecutive weeks. He was targeted three times and failed to record a catch in the Jets' Week 6 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Williams has proven in brief spurts that he can still play at a high level. He remains one of the best contested-catch X receivers in the NFL. But with Adams now in the fold, he doesn't really have a role in the Jets' offense.
Adams and Garrett Wilson give the Jets arguably the best wide receiver duo in the NFL, and Allen Lazard has reestablished himself as a featured player in the Jets' offense. He leads the NFL in touchdown receptions entering Week 7.
That leaves Williams as the obvious victim of the Adams trade. If the Jets are determined to find a trade partner for Williams — which it appears they are — they could opt to keep him inactive moving forward to avoid any injuries, especially given his history.
Williams was evaluated for a head injury following Monday night's game but cleared concussion protocol. There's no reason for the Jets to risk another injury if they know they will be trading him.
The Adams trade is already having ripple effects throughout the Jets' roster. Mike Williams seems likely to be the next domino to fall. Expect a trade sooner rather than later.
