As the New York Jets try to improve upon their shortcomings at the quarterback position last season, one name that has consistently popped up as a possible target for Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey is former top pick Kyler Murray, who may be looking for a change of scenery.
Murray is still a member of the Arizona Cardinals, and this team isn't necessarily forced to get rid of him. As a result, the Cardinals can dig their heels in and demand that teams like the Jets meet their asking price, which could be too rich for some out there to possibly swallow.
According to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN, one source believes that Murray (should whoever the Cardinals hire as head coach actually want to cut bait with him) could be had for a second-round pick, while another source believes a third-round pick could get it done.
Weinfuss compared the situation to that of Geno Smith last offseason, as he was traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Las Vegas Raiders to make way for the Sam Darnold contract. If the Jets pull this move off, they need to hope it ends up better than it did for Smith and the Raiders.
Jets could trade a Day 2 pick to the Cardinals for Kyler Murray
Murray only played five games last season, though he didn't exactly light it up. Jacoby Brissett put up better passing numbers than Murray, and there are some concerns about how well the former No. 1 overall pick's style of play is going to age if he loses some of his mobility.
However, Brissett lost 11 of his 12 starts with Arizona, suggesting that the situation around Murray was so bad that no one could have been successful. Murray still has a live arm and great mobility. Very rarely is a Top 20 quarterback in the NFL available via trade, even with some contract obstacles.
The Jets don't have a third-round pick this year due to the Haason Reddick trade. Trading No. 44 could be appealing if Arizona sends a Day 3 pick back in return. Perhaps sending a player with a third-round pick value, like Jermaine Johnson II or Breece Hall, will be enough to get the deal done.
If Murray is to be made available, the Cardinals may jump-start a bidding way for his services due to how many teams in the league need quarterback upgrades. In a year that could end with Glenn getting fired, the Jets need all the quarterback options they can get.
