With the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets, quarterback Aaron Rodgers likely always wanted his team to take an offensive playmaker early in the NFL draft. It never happened, at least not in the first round. Green Bay was content with Rodgers making the skill position players around him better, while the Packers tried to build up other positions.
The Jets did not take a wide receiver or pass-catching tight end in either of Rodgers's two seasons with the team, but to be fair, New York did take Garrett Wilson in 2022, so the need to get another wideout was not pressing. Rodgers should have been able to get the most out of Wilson, but part of the problem was that Rodgers was a shell of the quarterback he was with the Packers.
Now, Justin Fields is likely tasked with being the Jets QB1. He was signed this offseason to a two-year deal worth a maximum of $40 million. Rodgers was released. Maybe Fields can help Wilson be his most productive.
The Jets need to add weapons to help Justin Fields be successful
If Charles Davis of NFL.com is correct, though, Fields and Wilson are going to get some help in the 2025 NFL draft, the kind that would make Aaron Rodgers jealous. Davis has the Jets picking Penn State tight end Tyler Warren with the seventh pick overall. Warren is so much more than a tight end, too.
The 6'5 1/2" and 256-pound player has electric athleticism for his size and position. He also makes the most out of his targets. Over the last two seasons, Warren has 15 touchdown receptions, but he truly broke out in 2024 with 104 catches for 1,233 yards while also rushing the ball 26 times.
In other words, he is going to do anything he possibly can to help his team win. Not only will he be a boon in the passing game, but he could also line up as a running back near the goal line. He is the kind of weapon Rodgers never had, but Fields has to have.
The addition of the tight end would also help Wilson and the receiving corps. New York does not have a truly good wideout besides Wilson, so teams having to account for Warren is going to help everyone. Now, let's hope that Fields can improve on his career 61.1 completion percentage. If that happens, New York is going to far exceed expectations next season.
