Jets WRs dropping like flies as Adonai Mitchell pops up on injury report

The New York Jets cannot catch a break right now. Injuries have been piling up on all sides of the ball, but no position is worse than the wide receiver position. Veteran Tim Patrick is currently on injured reserve with a groin injury, first-round rookie Omar Cooper Jr. is nursing a high ankle sprain, and Arian Smith's season is over after suffering an ACL injury in Week 2.

New York now has only four receivers on the active roster. Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, Isaiah Williams, and recent practice squad elevation Malik McClain. But another pass catcher popped up on Thursday's injury report.

Adonai Mitchell, who is the Jets' second-leading receiver behind Wilson, is dealing with a finger injury. He was limited. It's obviously something new, considering the former Indianapolis Colts draft pick wasn't on Wednesday's report.

Hopefully, it's nothing serious. The Jets are currently working with scraps at wide receiver, and losing Mitchell would be a detrimental blow to their passing attack.

If Mitchell can't go on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, that will leave the Jets with only three wide receivers. They'll have no choice but to make some more elevations from the practice squad.

They have some decent veteran options. Former New York Giants fan favorite Sterling Shepard, signed last week after the severity of Cooper's injury was determined, is likely to see some action against the Lions. Despite being 33, he's still a solid option out of the slot.

Another familiar face could be added to the mix as well, as veteran Tyler Johnson, who spent the 2025 season with New York, has a chance to be elevated as well.

Regardless, Mitchell's injury is a concerning one. Reinforcements are a necessity, and expect at least one of Shepard or Johnson to be active on Sunday.

New York Jets' Thursday injury report takeaways

Thursday's injury report wasn't all bad news. The two Jets edge rushers on there, Joseph Ossai and David Bailey, maintained their status from Wednesday as limited and full participants, respectively.

Ossai seems to be trending in the right direction to potentially make his Jets debut. Bailey, as a full participant, is probably good to go.

Other than that, it seems like another absence for return specialist Kene Nwangwu, who has also not appeared in a game yet for the Jets in 2026. Minkah Fitzpatrick, Mason Taylor, and Kiko Mauigoa are also unlikely to suit up against Detroit.
