This offseason, the New York Jets made it a mission to go out and add some adults to their roster. They had a distinct lack of them on the team last year, and that was felt on a weekly basis.
That's why the Jets went out and got veteran quarterback Geno Smith and linebacker Demario Davis to take on leadership roles on both the offense and defense.
Davis, at 37, is now the elder statesman of the Jets. Despite his age, he still plays like he's in his 20s, and received most of his career accolades after he turned 30.
How does Davis do it? After all this time, how does he maintain his high level of play despite getting older?
Demario Davis reveals how he maintains his body after a 14-year NFL career
Davis was asked about his longevity in the NFL and what specifically he does to stay healthy despite his age.
"I think the science, just in terms of recovery, plays a major part, and I try to maximize on all types of technology that's out there and so I think all of that lends itself to longer careers and I don't think that I'm the exception. I think I'm the new norm to players who take care of their body, maximize the game and all this around it and are able to stay relatively healthy, they're going to have careers very similar to mine."Demario Davis
At age 37, Davis still manages to find a way to be one of the NFL's best linebackers.
Last season, Pro Football Focus had the former New Orleans Saints star as the sixth-best in the league. He earned an 81.4 overall grade and was particularly good at stopping the run.
Helping him age gracefully is his medical team, who he says work with him on his body daily.
"I have a phenomenal team that's working on me year-round. It's almost like a car once it comes off the track: it's always in the garage getting worked on and that has helped exponentially."Demario Davis
The Jets will need Davis to stay healthy in 2026 if they have any hope of turning around their poor defense, and maybe his off-the-field habits will even rub off on some of the younger players.
