It's been a long time, but New York Jets linebacker Demario Davis is coming back to the team he started his career with.
Davis, a 2012 third-round pick, will be playing for the Jets a third time in his career, and under a third different head coach, Aaron Glenn. But things are different this time. Sure, New York needs some steady, veteran play at linebacker, but Davis is being relied on to bring something less tangible.
Leadership. The Jets felt rudderless almost every game last season, and the five-time All-Pro linebacker is going to bring a level of respect within the building that his fellow teammates will have no choice but to listen to. It's one of the things that's made him so valuable, even entering his age-37 season.
Saints expert shares glowing review of new (and old) Jets LB Demario Davis
Despite having 14 years of NFL experience under his belt, Davis has aged like fine wine. Where his physical abilities may have fallen off a bit, his acumen for the game continues to get better with each passing season. FanSided's Saints expert Darrion Gray made sure to note it.
"Even at 37 years old, Demario Davis is playing at a high level. He’s not as fast as he used to be, and his downhill thumping ability has been on display more because of it. Davis still has some ranginess in his game though. Most importantly, he’s a strong leader and mentor. Expect Davis to instantly show a strong command of the defense and uplift and develop younger linebackers on the team."Darrion Gray
Jets fans may already be familiar with some aspects of his game. After all, he's spent five seasons in New York, from 2012 to 2015, and once again in 2017. As a Jet, Davis never received any of the accolades he got while in New Orleans, but still racked up 483 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and one interception.
But it isn't necessarily the production that the Jets are paying Davis a reported $22 million over the next two years for; it's the accountability and work ethic he'll instill in his teammates that make him worth it.
Davis' sixth season with the Jets won't necessarily be an All-Pro one, but it will hopefully leave a lasting impact that Glenn desperately needs on his players.
