Jets' Ty Simpson buzz won't go away after latest report from Adam Schefter

The New York Jets are practically destined to take a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft; the only questions are which prospect and when in the draft they'll pull the trigger.

Early on in the process, the Jets were linked to Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson the most over any other team. It was thanks in large part to the fact that they hold picks No. 16 and No. 33, two spots where it seems feasible Simpson would come off the board.

But as the weeks and months rolled on, it felt less likely Simpson would make his way to New York. After all, the Jets need win-now players, and picking a quarterback who won't see the field in 2026 doesn't make a lot of sense for a head coach with his back against the wall.

But on Monday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter made it clear that the Jets-Simpson buzz isn't going away any time soon, and in fact, there's still a real chance the Alabama quarterback dons the Green & White.

Jets among teams 'most interested in' Alabama's Ty Simpson

Schefter's pre-draft column featuring nuggets of information has a great deal of intel regarding Simpson and his prospects heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, and he singled out the Jets as one of the top teams for his services.

"The two teams that seem to be most interested in Simpson are the Jets and Cardinals. The Jets hold the No. 16 pick in the middle of Round 1 and the No. 33 pick at the top of Round 2. The Cardinals hold No. 34 in Round 2, right behind the Jets. If Arizona wants to leapfrog New York, it could not only land Simpson but also get the fifth-year option on his rookie contract by taking him in Round 1."

While Simpson is certainly the clear-cut QB2 in the incoming draft class, the Jets should not be looking to use their valuable draft picks on a player who won't help them win in 2026.

Aaron Glenn needs to show a pulse next season. He doesn't necessarily need to make it to the playoffs, but he needs to prove he can coach a competent team, something he failed to do in 2025.

In order to do that, he needs players who have a chance to start Week 1 and will make an impact when they're on the field. Simpson is not that player.

The Crimson Tide standout will have to sit for at least one season before he's ready to take the reins of a team's offense. Burning No. 16 or No. 33 on a player who won't play is just a misuse of their resources.

New York is better off taking a swing on Day 3, where the options aren't necessarily as polished, but still have some level of upside.

2027 is the year when the Jets should hope to find their franchise quarterback, when they hold three first-round selections.
