The New York Jets suffered another loss on Sunday afternoon as they fell 23-10 to the Baltimore Ravens on the road. With this loss, the Jets have officially clinched their tenth straight losing season.
Despite the loss, though, there were positives to take away from this game as Aaron Glenn and the Jets continue to search for long-term answers. Of the positives, many have been recent acquisitions made by Darren Mougey.
When looking at both sides of the football, one of the biggest positives has been Jowon Briggs. After another impressive performance on Sunday, Briggs continues to show real signs of being a long-term piece on a defensive line that is still searching for answers.
Briggs' continued production makes the move from Darren Mougey look better and better as each week goes by.
The Jets got a major steal with the Jowon Briggs trade
Darren Mougey and the Jets acquired Jowon Briggs near the end of training camp in a deal with the Browns. New York received Briggs and a 2026 seventh-round pick and sent a 2026 sixth-round pick to Cleveland.
Briggs was initially traded as a player who could become a solid rotational run defender for this Jets team. Eleven games into his Jets career, he has been so much more than that, showing off a promising pass-rush ability that was on display again in Sunday's loss.
Briggs finished the game with one sack, three pressures, one tackle for loss, one QB hit, and five total tackles. The 24-year-old also registered two QB hurries and tallied a 74.7 Pro Football Focus pass rush grade, which was the highest on the team.
This wasn't just a one-game flash from Briggs; the second-year defensive tackle has impressed all season long. Briggs has accumulated three sacks, 20 pressures, six QB hits, four tackles for loss, 15 QB hurries, and 18 total tackles.
The former 2024 seventh-round pick has also tallied an impressive 72.9 PFF overall grade, along with a strong 73.4 PFF pass rush grade. Both are improvements over his small six-game sample size with the Browns last season.
One of the most impressive aspects of this production and season for Briggs has been the fact that he has only played 301 defensive snaps, with 160 of those being pass-rush snaps.
Darren Mougey has shown the willingness to flip late-round picks for help on the defensive side of the football. Along with Briggs, Mougey has acquired Harrison Phillips and Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
After dealing Quinnen Williams at the trade deadline in a blockbuster move, it left the Jets with a major hole up front on defense. Briggs showing this potential is a major development for the future of the defense.
