Jets suggested to follow Eagles' lead in drafting Ellis Robinson IV

When in doubt, pluck from Georgia, right?

As a further reminder of how far the New York Jets have fallen, consider that the Philadelphia Eagles have more Super Bowl appearances (two) than the Jets have winning seasons (none) since the start of 2016.

Simply attributing the Eagles’ consistent postseason berths to better players is an understatement, and so is saying Doug Pederson and Nick Sirianni are superior coaches to Adam Gase and Robert Saleh. We’d be quite impressed if someone could successfully argue otherwise, especially given how things have gone for the latter in Tennessee.

You can spend all of the money you want, but you can’t consistently win without drafting and developing the right talent. Philadelphia figured that out after the Chip Kelly era mercifully ended in 2015, and the Eagles have thrived since developing a Georgia Bulldogs pipeline.

As Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn attempt to finally right the Jets’ ship, maybe turning their eyes to Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV is a proper next step.

New York Jets could follow in the Eagles’ footsteps by drafting Georgia’s Ellis Robinson IV

We can’t take credit for pitching the Robinson idea, though it makes plenty of sense given the Jets’ need for a Sauce Gardner replacement. Pro Football Focus’ Gordon McGuinness published a mock draft on Tuesday and suggested the Jets use one of their three first-round picks on the Bulldogs’ junior cornerback.

Fans often care about only two (well, technically three) numbers when discussing cornerbacks: height, weight, and interceptions. The 6-foot, 180-pound Robinson might check the size box, though that depends on what you consider ideal for corners.

It’s worth noting that the Denver Broncos’ Pat Surtain II is 6-foot-2 and 202 pounds, and the Houston Texans’ Derek Stingley Jr. is 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds. They’re widely considered two of the best corners in the league, if not the top two.

Robinson, who was born in Connecticut but finished his high school career at prep powerhouse IMG Academy, enters Saturday’s game against Auburn with an interception and four pass breakups.

When discussing the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs, you must keep in mind that last week’s thrilling win over Alabama marked their first one-score win this year. Georgia won each of its first five games by at least 24 points, so Robinson typically wasn’t playing deep into the second half.

McGuinness picked the perfect time to put Robinson on Jets fans’ radar. Georgia will exclusively play SEC games through Nov. 21 before closing against Georgia Tech in their annual “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” rivalry clash. From there, the Bulldogs are positioned to play in the SEC Championship Game and reach their fifth College Football Playoff in six years.

As for the Jets’ other two picks, McGuinness has them taking Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr and Ole Miss defensive lineman Will Echoles at No. 9 and No. 11, respectively.
