The New York Jets didn't add a single wide receiver in free agency, and instead waited until the 2026 NFL Draft to address the position.
At the end of the first round, New York drafted Indiana's Omar Cooper Jr., making a much-needed addition to their wide receiver room.
But it's still a relatively thin group, with Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, and Cooper leading the way. Behind them are disappointing 2025 fourth-round pick Arian Smith and special teams ace Isaiah Williams.
The Jets should look to add a veteran to the room to complement their top three, and luckily for them, one of Geno Smith's old targets is out there and available.
Jets urged to add former Seahawks, Raiders WR Tyler Lockett
Sports Illustrated's Devon Platana believes the Jets should look to sign former Seattle Seahawks star Tyler Lockett. At age 33, he's not the player he once was, but he could provide valuable veteran depth to an otherwise young receiver room.
"During Smith's run as Seattle's full-time starter (2022-24), Lockett amassed 212 receptions for 2,577 yards and 16 TDs in 50 games...An average of 842.3 receiving yards and 5.3 touchdowns per season is nothing to scoff at."Devon Platana
Lockett even ended up joining Smith for a little bit in Las Vegas last season, after being released by the Tennessee Titans in October. In 10 games, he hauled in 22 receptions, 221 yards, and a touchdown.
While he was a much-needed addition for the Raiders, who were likely planning on trading away Jakobi Meyers at the deadline, Lockett won't be a focal point of the Jets' offense; they have enough targets to go around as is.
Instead, the former Pro Bowler would serve as a role model to the Jets' young pass catchers, namely Mitchell and Cooper. With 11 years of NFL experience under his belt, he could be an important mentor for the youngsters.
It's not like Lockett will cost a lot either. Spotrac projects the veteran to sign a one-year, $1.7 million contract. New York could certainly afford that.
Either way, the Jets could use an experienced presence in their wide receiver room, and considering his past relationship with Smith, this one would make a lot of sense.
