The New York Jets received some bad news at the start of training camp when it was revealed nose tackle T'Vondre Sweat would start training camp on the Non-Football Injury list as he rehabs a hamstring injury.
It's a disappointing start to Sweat's Jets tenure, as his durability was a concern that was echoed by Titans fans when he was coming over in the trade.
But one player's absence can open the door for others to step up, and the latest report from The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt suggests one Jets player is taking advantage of the opportunity in front of him.
Could it lead to an expanded role, despite initially being preordained as a reserve player for his rookie season?
New York Jets rookie Darrell Jackson Jr. stepping up in training camp with new opportunity
According to Rosenblatt, Jackson has had ample opportunity to get on the field in the wake of Sweat's injury, and he's been hard to miss thanks to his hulking physical presence.
"Defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat is on the NFI list with a hamstring injury and will miss some time, providing Jackson, a fourth-round pick, with a valuable opportunity to get some reps. As with Sweat, it’s not hard to spot Jackson when he’s on the field — though in a different way, as Jackson’s size is more about height and muscle. Still, he makes his teammates — even someone like 6-foot-1, 313-pound Jowon Briggs — look small when lined up next to them."
Jackson, one of the Jets' fourth-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, seems to be taking advantage of his practice reps and putting them to good use.
It was previously reported by ESPN's Rich Cimini that Jackson was in line for a "redshirt" season, where he would be riding the bench his rookie year to prepare himself for a larger role in 2027 and beyond.
Instead, it seems Jackson may end up with the chance to make an earlier impact than expected, especially if injuries continue to crop up in players like Sweat.
Honestly, it's better for the Florida State product to get his first taste of NFL action sooner rather than later. Injuries happen in the league, and if any of Sweat, Jowon Briggs, or Harrison Phillips gets banged up, we could see Jackson on the field in a regular-season game.
It's always good to have as many players ready to play as possible, and this is a good chance for Jackson to get his sea legs under him,
