After the New York Jets traded away Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams at the trade deadline last year, it was obvious that Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey knew the writing was on the wall when it came to the holdovers from the previous regime.
Fast forward to the offseason, and now Jermaine Johnson is gone. Another building block from the Joe Douglas-Robert Saleh era shipped to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat. The move reunited Johnson with his former head coach.
Now, it feels like no one is safe on the Jets roster as Glenn and Mougey strip it down to the studs and remake the roster in their own image. Nothing is off the table as we move deeper into the offseason.
There's only one player that Jets fans should feel comfortable buying their jersey, and that's wide receiver Garrett Wilson.
Garrett Wilson remains the only untouchable asset on the Jets
Through all the turnover and shakeup over the last five months, one thing is sure to stay the same. Wilson is the Jets' No. 1 wide receiver.
The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reported on the Jets' willingness to talk trade on just about every holdover from the previous regime, except their star wideout.
"The Jets have shown a willingness to listen on trades involving holdovers from the previous regime. That does not include wide receiver Garrett Wilson — he’s not going anywhere."Zack Rosenblatt
New York's faith in Wilson stems from his on-and-off-the-field talent. Not only is he their best player, but he's one of their best leaders, too, voted a captain this past offseason.
Despite not catching a pass after Week 6, Wilson still managed to lead the Jets in receiving yards with 395. Second-highest was tight end Mason Taylor, who managed to record 369 yards.
The Jets will listen to offers on any other player not named Wilson. The problem is, they don't have many other valuable players.
Rosenblatt named linebacker Jamien Sherwood as a possible target for other teams, coming off a down year despite his contract extension. Trading him would incur $10 million in dead cap, while freeing up only $1.5 million.
Edge rusher Will McDonald IV certainly has value, but considering the Jets' desperate need for edge rushers, they absolutely should not ship out another one.
At this point, the Jets are likely done trading away assets, barring a trade back in the upcoming NFL draft. But fans should rest easy knowing that, despite other teams salivating at the opportunity of acquiring their lone offensive star, Wilson isn't going anywhere.
