The NY Jets decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers this offseason was met with skepticism from the fanbase, further addled by Justin Fields' recent injury putting a bit of a damper on proceedings, but both Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey believe a rebuild is the right way forward.
Enticed by what Rodgers put on display in a year where he managed to throw for just under 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns, the Steelers decided to get into the Rodgers business after being unable to come to terms with either Fields or Russell Wilson on a new contract.
While the Steelers, like the Jets, believe Rodgers could be their one-way ticket to contention. Considering how rusty he looks at Steelers training camp, Pittsburgh may need to tap the brakes just a little bit when it comes to how much slack Rodgers can pick up.
Rodgers' first pass in Thursday's team drills was intercepted, which is not what a fanbase desperate for improved quarterback play. The Steelers may realize what Jets fans became aware of at the end of last season.
Jets fans can laugh at Aaron Rodgers' INT at Steelers training camp
The tough part for Jets fans, who will have to see Rodgers in Week 1, is the fact that the Steelers will likely finish the season with a better record and more effective passing offense. Mike Tomlin has consistently been able to drag more ineffective quarterbacks into the postseason.
While Rodgers is still very good at the pure act of dropping back and whipping the ball down the field, the combination of his limited mobility, rigidness with regard to how the offense should be constructed, and the fact that he likely won't play for more than one more year all led to his departure.
Rodgers will have to deal with a Steelers team that has exactly one very good receiver in DK Metcalf and a suspect offensive line. This could lead to some struggles if he is pressured and Metcalf gets off to a slow start, which a healthy Fields and motivated Jets team could possibly take advantage of in the right situation.
While Rodgers will likely put up numbers similar to what he produced with the Jets last year, his training camp rust shows that the Jets didn't get rid of the same player who won MVPs in Green Bay. Fields looks to be the way forward when healthy.
