The New York Jets have been tantalized throughout the summer by No. 2 overall draft pick David Bailey, thanks to his elite burst and freakish athleticism off the edge.
See, one of Bailey's biggest draws ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft was his high floor and the perceived notion that he is a "win-now" player. He's certainly lived up to that through the first week of training camp.
But it seems like the excitement for the former Texas Tech standout may have to be placed on hold for the moment, as Bailey needed to exit practice after hitting the ground awkwardly on a pass rush rep Saturday morning.
It's reportedly a lower-leg injury for Bailey, something that forced him to miss the remainder of practice. But Aaron Glenn spoke to reporters after practice and indicated that the No. 2 pick will be just fine.
David Bailey gets banged up at New York Jets training camp
ESPN's Rich Cimini detailed the sequence of events that led to Bailey's injury, but also reported that the rookie "seemed OK."
"Bailey walks gingerly off the field with a trainer after going to the ground on a third-down pass rush — another sputtered drive for the starting offense... Bailey leaves the injury tent and walks back to the sideline, carrying his helmet. Seems OK."
The incident occurred right at the end of practice, so on the bright side, Bailey didn't miss much. The Jets head coach also did his best to provide optimism at his press conference after the training camp session.
"David Bailey... man he got up after the ankle, he'll be fine too, we just gotta keep him away from the quarterback."
Bailey's been a bit of a disruptive force since coming into practice with the Jets, dominating reps and making life miserable for New York's offense.
If Bailey misses any time, it should give New York's offense some breathing room for a bit, but in all honesty, the Jets can't afford to lose any more pass rushers this summer.
They're already without free agent signing Joseph Ossai, who started camp on the PUP list. Kingsley Enagbare had also missed several practices over the last week, dealing with his own injury.
The rotation has gotten fairly thin early here in training camp. Will McDonald has had plenty of reps, alongside 2025 draft pick Tyler Baron. Hopefully, the Jets will get some healthier bodies back in time for joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
